Daal & Rice

Daal

Ingredients

1 cup toor daal
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp red chili powder
1 tsp lemon juice
salt, to taste
1 tsp vegetable oil
5 cups water

Steps

  1. Rinse daal until water runs somewhat clear.
  2. Soak daal in water for 30 minutes.
  3. Boil 5 cups of water, add turmeric powder and toor daal. Cook for 20-30 seconds or until the toor daal is soft. You can add more water if needed. If you have a pressure cooker, then you can cook the daal in there.
  4. Heat oil in a small sauce pan, add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 20-30 minutes. Add to cooked daal.
  5. Add red chili powder, salt, lemon juice - mix well and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Serve with plain white rice or jazzed up rice (recipe below).

Rice

Ingredients

1 cup Basmati rice
1 tbsp chopped cilantro
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp clarified butter or regular unsalted butter
salt, to taste

Steps

  1. Rinse rice until water runs somewhat clear.
  2. Boil water in a large pot, add rice and salt - cook for 6-8 minutes or until rice is cooked.
  3. In a small sauce pan, heat butter on medium heat, add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 20-30 seconds, turn off the heat and add cilantro.
  4. Add rice to sauce pain and mix well.

Serves 2 | Time 10 minutes
